Women's Soccer - Sat, Oct. 25, 2008
Bourbonnais, Ill. - A goal from 30 yards out by sophomore midfielder Janel Schmitt with just under 15 minutes remaining in regulation proved to be the game-winner as Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) defeated visiting Saint Xavier University (Ill.), 4-3, in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) women's soccer action Saturday afternoon in Bourbonnais, Ill. The game was the regular-season finale for both teams. The Cougars finish the regular season with a 7-9-1 overall record and fourth in the conference standings with a 5-4 mark. SXU will take the No. 4 seed into next week's CCAC Women's Soccer Tournament, which will boast the top eight teams from the CCAC in a single-elimination event.
Sophomore forward Michelle Davis gave ONU a 2-0 lead shortly before halftime when she scored a pair of goals within two minutes of one another. The first one came at the 42:05 mark of the first half off an assist from Schmitt, while the second goal came off an unassisted shot at the 43:50 mark of the half. Trailing 2-0 at the half, Saint Xavier came out firing in the second half and scored a goal in the 55th minute when sophomore midfielder Carey Brown (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) found the back of the net off a corner kick from junior defender Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg). Davis struck again for ONU shortly after scoring her third goal of the day on an open field breakaway.
Trailing 3-1 with just over 30 minutes to play in regulation, senior midfielder Sarah Scigalski (Alsip, Ill./Mother McAuley) took a cross pass from Brown in for a goal to cut the lead to one, 3-2, in the game's 60th minute. The Cougars would then tie the game, 3-3, just three minutes later when sophomore forward Kelly Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) was set up nicely by assists from Martinez and sophomore defender Jessica Belmonte (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South), respectively. However, in the 75th minute, Schmitt took a pass from freshman forward Jessica Jones and scored the game-winning goal on her 30-yard shot. Senior keeper Nikki Grant (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) played 81 minutes in goal for SXU and finished with six saves.
Saint Xavier (7-9-1 overall/5-4 CCAC) now carries the No. 4 seed into the eight-team 2008 CCAC Women's Soccer Tournament, which begins on Saturday, November 1. The Cougars will host No. 5 seed Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in quarterfinals action next Saturday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
