CHICAGO - Behind two goals from sophomore forward Lissa Coby (Lake Villa, Ill./Grant Community), the No. 21 ranked Saint Xavier University women's soccer team picked up a 3-2 win over Savannah College of Art & Design (Ga.) in its home and season opener Monday at SXU Stadium in Chicago. In addition to Coby, freshman midfielder Sarah Scigalski (Alsip, Ill./Mother McAuley) also scored a goal for the Cougars in Monday's win.
SCAD scored the game's first goal with 16:44 remaining in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. With the Cougars down 1-0 at the half, Coby scored her first goal unassisted at the start of the second half to tie the game. Scigalski later scored with 25:42 remaining in the game off an assist from sophomore midfielder Aleksandra Sudar (Omaha, Neb./Omaha Bryan).
Coby recorded the game-winning third goal with just over 22 minutes (22:17) remaining in regulation off a pass from freshman midfielder Breanna Cashel (Arnold, Mo./St. Pius X). SCAD tacked on its second and final goal with 7:12 remaining in the game. Senior goalkeeper Melissa Painter (Elk Grove, Calif./William Penn University) finished with 10 saves for Saint Xavier in her first start as a Cougar.
Saint Xavier heads to Bourbonnais, Ill., this weekend to participate in the Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) Tiger Classic. The Cougars will play on Friday, September 2, at 2 p.m. against St. Ambrose University (Iowa) before playing Grand View College (Iowa) on Saturday, September 3, at 12 p.m.
