CHICAGO - Despite a first-half goal by senior midfielder Sarah "Big Cat" Scigalski (Alsip, Ill./Mother McAuley), the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team could not prevent a late goal by No. 9 ranked and undefeated Trinity Christian College (Ill.) and lost a hard-fought game, 2-1, on "Senior Night" Tuesday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The Trolls scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute on an unassisted breakaway by junior forward Carly Comerouski to improve their overall record to 16-0 and 8-0 in the CCAC. The Cougars fall to 7-8-1 overall with the loss and fourth place in the conference standings with a 5-3 mark.
Trinity Christian got on the scoreboard right away when freshman midfielder Allison Doyle broke free down the left side of the field and scored in the game's second minute off an assist from sophomore midfielder Trisha Airth. SXU tied things up just 11 minutes later when Scigalski found the back of the net following a scramble in front of the goal that sent TCC freshman keeper Hannah Gonzales to the ground. It was just the third goal given up by the Trolls all season and the first goal allowed by a conference opponent. However, with just over six minutes remaining in regulation, Comerouski was able to get past the Cougar defense and score to give her team the 2-1 victory. Junior goalkeeper Danielle Wagner (Worth, Ill./University of Illinois/Stagg) finished with seven saves for SXU.
Saint Xavier (7-8-1 overall/5-3 CCAC) wraps up its 2008 regular season with a road game against CCAC foe Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) on Saturday, October 25. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start in Bourbonnais, Ill.
