Joliet, Ill. - Despite solid efforts by senior middle blocker Chelsey Guay (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) and senior outside hitter Mallory Winkler (Chicago, Ill./Queen of Peace), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team recorded just one win over its four weekend matches at the University of St. Francis (Ill.) Big Guns Classic in Joliet, Ill. The Cougars (11-25 overall) won its opening match Friday afternoon against Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.), but dropped its next three to Indiana Wesleyan University (Ind.), Bryan College (Tenn.) and Taylor University (Ind.), respectively.
SXU defeated CSU in four games 32-30, 25-18, 18-25 and 25-21 behind 14 kills from senior outside hitter Laura Gullickson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara). Guay, Winkler, and freshman middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York) each tallied nine kills toward the winning effort, while senior libero Jenna Guide (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) led the defensive front with 22 digs. In Friday's second match, the Cougars fell in three straight games 15-25, 16-25 and 16-25 to Indiana Wesleyan University. Guay and Scudder each finished with seven kills, while freshman setter Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) set up the offense with 23 set assists. Guide chipped in 15 digs for the Cougars against Indiana Wesleyan.
Guay tallied nine kills in SXU's first match Saturday against Bryan College, which the Cougars lost in three 18-25, 20-25 and 18-25. Major posted 25 assists, while Guide finished with 15 digs. In the weekend's final match against Taylor University (Ind.), junior outside hitter Stephanie Galas (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) led the offense with eight kills, but SXU lost in three 18-25, 20-25 and 19-25. Winker recorded six kills, while Major finished with 20 set assists. Guide and Gullickson each contributed 13 digs.
Saint Xavier (11-25 overall/6-2 CCAC) returns to its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) schedule on Tuesday, October 21, with a road match against league-leading Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Bourbonnais, Ill.
