Findlay, Ohio - Saint Xavier University freshman kicker A.J. Nichols (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) was named the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Mideast League Special Teams Player of the Week when the league released the honor early Monday afternoon. Nichols connected on a 30-yard field goal with 34 seconds remaining in regulation to give the No. 19 ranked Saint Xavier University football team a thrilling 17-14 road win over No. 15 Ohio Dominican University (Ohio) Saturday at Panther Field in Columbus, Ohio. It is the second time this season that Nichols has earned the league's weekly recognition.
It was the fourth time in 2008 that SXU has garnered the weekly special teams award with Rodgers garnering the honor last week, Nichols earning the recognition two weeks ago and junior wide receiver/punter Bill McKeon (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) capturing it following the opening week. It is also the fifth time this season the Cougars have had a MSFA Player of the Week in any category with senior quarterback Jeremy Zientek (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist) earning offensive player of the week honors three weeks ago.
Saint Xavier (4-2 overall/2-0 MSFA) heads to Urbana, Ohio, on Saturday, October 18, to take on MSFA Mideast League foe Urbana University (Ohio). The game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. (eastern) start.
