Men's Soccer - Fri, Oct. 10, 2008
St. Augustine, Fla. - A penalty kick goal by junior midfielder Eoin Cassin just four minutes and 36 seconds into overtime lifted Flagler College (Fla.) to a 2-1 victory over visiting Saint Xavier University (Ill.) in non-conference NAIA men's soccer action Thursday night in St. Augustine, Fla. The Cougars (5-8 overall/3-2 CCAC) scored the game's first goal Thursday, but were out-shot 10-3 in shots-on-goal. It was SXU's third straight game that was dropped in overtime.
Freshman defender Padraig O'Connor (Killarney Co. Kerry, Ireland/St. Brendans) scored Saint Xavier's lone goal just over 18 minutes into regulation on a beautiful, unassisted goal that curled into the inside left post from 20 yards out. However, nearly 20 minutes later, sophomore midfielder Conor Killeen tied the game, 1-1, with a goal off assists from freshman midfielder Pol Berenguer and sophomore midfielder Dan Reid. The game remained tied the entire second half and was not decided until the penalty kick in overtime. Junior keeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) finished with eight saves for the Cougars.
Saint Xavier (5-8 overall/3-2 CCAC) stays in St. Augustine, Fla., for a game against St. Thomas University (Fla.) on Saturday, October 11. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. (eastern) at Flagler College.
