Huntington, Ind. - The Saint Xavier University men's cross country squad ran at the E DeWitt Baker Cross Country Invitational at Huntington University in Huntington, Ind., on Saturday, October 4. This was a small four-team meet featuring the No. 8 ranked Huntington Forresters against Saint Xavier and two Indiana squads, Holy Cross College and University of Saint Francis (Ind.). The Cougars finished second overall with 43 points to Huntington's 16, while Saint Francis was third with 83 and Holy Cross finished fourth with 111. Leading the Cougars was sophomore Evan Lowry (Horton, Mich./Havover-Horton) in fifth overall among 27 runners with 26:55. Next for the Cougars was freshman Andy Peters (Yellow Springs, Ohio/Yellow Springs) in eighth with 27:41, followed by sophomore Roy Witty (Mount Greenwood, Ill./Marist) with 27:48 good enough for ninth place. Freshman Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) finished in 10th with a time of 27:55, followed by freshman Buck Hill (Streator, Ill./Ottawa-Marquette) in 27:57 for 11th place, freshman Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) in 13th at 28:03 and junior Manny Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) in 16th with 29:03. "Overall this was a good meet," said SXU men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "This was Evan's first race this season and he performed as expected. We packed well, however a bit too far behind Lowry. Huntington is a great team, but I felt that we should have raced them a bit tougher. We do see solid improvements on a weekly basis." The Cougars travel to Kenosha, Wis., to run in this week's Lucien Rosa Invitational sponsored by University of Wisconsin-Parkside. The men's race kicks off at 11 a.m.
