CHICAGO - Sophomore defender Jessica Belmonte (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) recorded a pair of assists and helped the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team post a shutout in a 3-0 road win over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Saturday afternoon in Chicago. The Cougars improve to 6-5-1 on the season and now have a perfect 4-0 mark in the conference standings. In addition, SXU junior keeper Danielle Wagner (Worth, Ill./University of Illinois/Stagg) finished Saturday's game with an impressive 13 saves.
The Cougars got on the scoreboard early with a goal by senior midfielder Britney Kendzora (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) set up off a corner kick by Belmonte just seven minutes and 43 seconds into the game. Leading 1-0 at halftime, the Cougars poured on some more offense in the second half when Belmonte sent a cross to freshman forward Larissa Jondle (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X) for her team's second goal at the 60:00 mark of the game. SXU got its third and final score of the day on an unassisted breakaway by sophomore forward Kelly Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) with less than a minute to play in regulation. The Cougars finished the game with 13 shots-on-goal.
Saint Xavier (6-5-1 overall/4-0 CCAC) takes on CCAC foe Robert Morris College (Ill.) in a road match-up on Wednesday, October 8, in Chicago. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
