Men's Soccer - Wed, Oct. 1, 2008
Joliet, Ill. - A goal by sophomore forward Al Palar (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) in the game's 63rd minute gave the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team a 2-1 lead, which it would hold for the win against Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) late Wednesday afternoon at the Galowich YMCA in Joliet, Ill. The Cougars (5-5 overall/3-0 CCAC) trailed early in the game after giving up a goal in the seventh minute of play.
Sophomore midfielder David Oropeza scored the opening goal for USF when he took advantage of a long pass by junior defender Nick Linko. However, SXU senior midfielder Agustin Herrera (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) tied things up, 1-1, with a goal in the 27th minute of regulation. The score remained tied at the half before Palar recorded the eventual game-winning goal just over 18 minutes into second-half action. The Cougar defense allowed just one shot-on-goal by St. Francis after halftime.
Saint Xavier (5-5 overall/3-0 CCAC) continues conference play on Saturday, October 4, with a road game against Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Chicago.
