Joliet, Ill. - Sophomore forward Kelly Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) played a role in every goal scored as the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team beat Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival University of St. Francis (Ill.), 5-1, late Tuesday afternoon in Joliet, Ill. Steinhaus scored three of the five goals for the Cougars and also recorded an assist on each of the remaining two goals. With the win, SXU improves to 5-5-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference standings.
Steinhaus was extremely aggressive offensively for the Cougars posting nine shots on goal in the game en route to her three-goal performance. She scored the game's first goal in the 12th minute off a rebound of her own shot. The next goal for SXU came off the foot of freshman forward Larissa Jondle (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X) in the 30th minute on a pass from Steinhaus. Leading 2-0 at the half, SXU continued pouring on the offense in the second half with Steinhaus scoring off a slotted ball from freshman midfielder Nancy Schueth (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X) in the 49th minute. Schueth then got in on the goal scoring in the 83rd minute off another assist by Steinhaus. With 1:30 to play, a cross from sophomore defender Nikki Gendron (Rockford, Ill./Boylan) turned into a third goal for Steinhaus. The Fighting Saints scored their lone goal on a second-half penalty kick by freshman forward Breanda Nava. Junior Danielle Wagner (Worth, Ill./University of Illinois/Stagg) finished the game with four saves for the Cougars.
