Fort Wayne, Ind. - Despite a spot on the all-tournament team for senior right side Laura Gullickson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team struggled and went winless in four matches against tough competition over the weekend as part of the Indiana Institute of Technology Fall Classic in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Cougars (6-17 overall) faceed a pair of ranked opponents Friday in No. 22 Indiana Wesleyan University (Ind.) and No. 19 Indiana Institute of Technology (Ind.) and then matched up with University of Northwestern Ohio (Ohio) and University of Michigan-Dearborn (Mich.) Saturday.
Gullickson finished with 12 kills in a tough five-game match loss to Indiana Wesleyan Friday. SXU won the first two games of the match 25-23 and 25-23, but could not get the decisive third game and dropped the next three 19-25, 13-25, and 6-15. Senior libero Jenna Guide (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) had 22 digs in the match, while senior middle blocker Chelsey Guay (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) posted six total blocks (three solos, three assists). Against host Indiana Tech, the Cougars had difficulty getting their offense in sync and fell in three straight games 8-25, 12-25, and 9-25. Guay led the offensive attack with four kills, while Guide tallied eight digs.
Saturday's matches did not start off much better as the Cougars dropped their morning match to Northwestern Ohio in three games 11-25, 22-25, and 18-25. Guay finished with 11 kills and three total blocks (one solo, two assists). It was more of the same in the afternoon match versus University of Michigan-Dearborn, which SXU lost in three games 14-25, 11-25, and 16-25. Gullickson had five kills for the Cougars, while Guide posted six digs.
