CHICAGO - Chrissy Heine, a 6-0 senior forward at Hampshire High School in Hampshire, Ill., has commited to continue both her athletic and academic career at Saint Xavier University as a member of the Cougar women's basketball team. Heine led the Whips to a Big Northern Conference East Division title for the second straight year and its first regional title since 2005 last season. She averaged 13.0 points and 6.8 rebounds during her junior year in 2008-09. SXU women's basketball coach Bob Hallberg feels Heine has the perfect combination of athletic ability and versatility to fit in with the up-tempo, aggressive style of play he has coached during his tenure with the Cougars.
"We feel that Chrissy is a great catch for our program," said Hallberg. "Her versatility will give her the opportunity to play at different positions on our team and the chance to come in as a freshman and play right away."
Heine is the daughter of Don and Nancy Heine of Hampshire. She plans to pursue a degree in physical therapy when she joins Saint Xavier University for the 2010-11 academic year. As a junior at Hampshire High School under coach Sue Ellett, Heine was a member of the National Honor Society as well as a Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) All-State Class 3A & 4A Fourth Team selection, Northwest Herald All-Area Team member and Daily Herald All-Area Team member. She also is an all-conference honorable mention volleyball player for the Whips.
Saint Xavier had another successful basketball season in 2008-09 finishing 26-5 overall and making its seventh straight appearance at the NAIA National Tournament in Jackson, Tenn. The Cougars open their 2009-10 campaign on Tuesday, November 3, with a 7 p.m. road game against NCAA Division I DePaul University at McGrath Arena in Chicago.
