CHICAGO - Saint Xavier University senior midfielder Jen Belmonte (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South), sophomore forward Lissa Coby (Lake Villa, Ill./Grant Community), and sophomore Cassie Rumpf (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) were all named to the 2005 NAIA/National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region VII First Team when the honors were released recently by the regional office. In addition, Belmonte earned Region VII Player of the Year honors for her impressive 2005 campaign.
Belmonte recorded nine goals and 14 assists playing in all 20 games during her senior season. Coby led the Cougars in goals (12), assists (21), and total points (45) in 2005, but played in just 17 games due to injury. Rumpf played in all 20 games for Saint Xavier at defender and tallied two assists, while anchoring a defense that allowed just over a goal a game (1.06).
"Jen has been the heart of this program for the past four years and helped us make great strides during this time," said SXU women's soccer coach Derek Begich. "She is the first women's soccer player from Saint Xavier University to be named Region VII Player of the Year. Jen has been a great role model for the players in our program. Her attitude, work ethic, passion for the game, and leadership are second to none. It has been a great honor to coach Jen and I am going to miss her next year."
The Cougars also had two players recognized on the 2005 All-Region VII Second Team in senior goalkeeper Melissa Painter (Elk Grove, Calif./William Penn University) and freshman defender Britney Kendzora (Lemont, Ill./Lemont). Painter started all 20 games for SXU and finished the year with 128 saves and 10 shutouts. Kenzora tallied three assists in 2005 and helped lead a defense that allowed just 22 goals over 20 games.
Saint Xavier finished the 2005 season with an overall record of 14-4-2 and was named co-champion of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) with an 8-1 mark. The Cougars also qualified for the quarterfinals of the NAIA Region VII Tournament.
