CHICAGO - Freshman outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) earned all-tournament recognition, but the Saint Xavier University volleyball team had a hard time generating victories over the weekend at the Canton Comfort Inn Volleyball Invitational in Canton, Ohio. The Cougars (10-9 overall) lost both their Friday matches to Walsh University (Ohio) and Daemen College (N.Y.), respectively, but then opened up Saturday with a three-set match win over Houghton University (N.Y.). Unfortunately, SXU could not carry the momentum into the final match Saturday falling in three sets to Shawnee State University (Ohio).
Knudsen and freshman outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) both recorded nine kills in the opening match against Walsh, but Saint Xavier fell in three sets 12-25, 24-26, 18-25. Sophomore setter Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) finished with 20 assists for the Cougars, while senior right side Stephanie Galas (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) tallied four digs to lead SXU defensively. In Friday's second match, Saint Xavier dropped another in three falling to Daemen 19-25, 22-25, 21-25 despite seven kills by sophomore middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community).
Mullaney had 14 kills and four digs to lead the Cougars to its lone win at the invitational, a three-set match win over Houghton University (N.Y.) 25-13, 25-16, 25-10. Knudsen and Galas each recorded nine kills in the winning effort, while Major posted 35 assists and five digs. Saint Xavier fell to Shawnee State University (Ohio) in three sets in Saturday's final match 16-25, 17-25, 19-25. Knudsen led SXU offensively with nine kills, while Major set things up with a team-best 22 assists.
Saint Xavier (10-9 overall/1-0 CCAC) gets back to its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate on Tuesday, September 22, with a road match against Trinity Christian College (Ill.). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Palos Heights, Ill.
