Grand Rapids, Mich. - A goal by junior forward Jeovani Pantoja in the 82nd minute lifted Aquinas College (Mich.) to a 1-0 home victory over No. 13 ranked Saint Xavier University (Ill.) in NAIA men's soccer action Saturday afternoon in Grand Rapids, Mich. The non-conference loss ended a five-game win streak for the Cougars, who also allowed their first goal since SXU's season opener back on August 22. Senior goalkeeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) finished the game with four saves to help lead Saint Xavier Saturday.
The game was a defensive struggle throughout with both teams combining for just eight shots-on-goal. Aquinas netted the game-winning goal off an assist by sophomore midfielder Joey VanGessel. Sophomore midfielder Al Palar (Zabrze, Poland/Plainfield Central), sophomore forward Matt Klanic (Aurora, Ill./Bowling Green State/Waubonsie Valley) and senior defender Brendan Falloon (Orland Park, Ill./Illinois Tech/Marist) each recorded a shot-on-goal for the Cougars.
Saint Xavier (5-2-0 overall/1-0-0 CCAC) returns to its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate on Saturday, September 26, with a road game against Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.). The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start in Milwaukee, Wis.
