CHICAGO - Following a scoreless first half, Saint Xavier University had trouble slowing down Indiana Wesleyan University (Ind.) in second-half action falling, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in NAIA women's soccer action at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The Wildcats were aggressive offensively throughout the game outshooting the Cougars, 20-10, including nine shots-on-goal compared to just four by SXU. Junior keeper Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake Orion) played the game's first 66 minutes and posted six saves, but had to leave the game due to injury following IWU's second goal.
In the 49th minute, the Wildcats notched their first goal of the game on a header by sophomore midfielder Heidi Breckner off a well-placed corner kick by senior midfielder Catherine Turner. Indiana Wesleyan's next goal came in the 66th minute when freshman forward Kylie Dial took an unassisted shot off a loose ball in front of the net. Sophomore midfielder Tori Lee finished off the scoring for the Wildcats when she got past the SXU keeper in the box off an assist by junior forward Megan Marshall. Freshman forward Elysha Peele (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) led the Cougar offense with three shots, including two shots-on-goal.
Saint Xavier (4-4-0 overall) opens its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) schedule this week playing host to Robert Morris University (Ill.) on Wednesday, September 23. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
