Bourbonnais, Ill. - Behind a 10th place finish by junior Evan Lowry (Horton, Mich./Hanover-Horton), the Saint Xavier University men's cross country team finished fourth out of eight teams at the Midwest Classic Friday in Bourbonnais, Ill. This was the first year for the Classic and it featured a number of nationally ranked teams led by host, Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). Lowry completed the 8K event (8,000 meters) in a time of 27:18.25 to claim his 10th place finish out of the 76 runners competing.

Other top finishers for the Cougars Friday were sophomore Andy Peters (Yellow Springs, Ohio/Yellow Springs) in 19th place at 28:09.13, junior Roy Witty (Mount Greenwood, Ill./Marist) in 24th place with a time of 28:24.56, sophomore Daniel Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice) in 27th place at 28:35.02, sophomore Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) in 30th place with a time of 28:50.03, sophomore Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) in 33rd place at 29:10.26 and senior Emmanuel Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) in 35th at 29:27.84. SXU finished behind conference rival Olivet Nazarene in first place and non-conference foes Taylor University (Ind.) and Marian University (Ohio) in second and third place, respectively. "Not there yet, but getting close," said Saint Xavier men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "Our pack broke up in the last mile, but I was excited by Lowry's race. Looking forward to this weekend, since this will be our first meet against solid competition."

Saint Xavier heads to South Bend, Ind., on Saturday, September 18, to take part in the National Catholic Championships hosted by University of Notre Dame. The 8K men's race will begin at 5 p.m. at Saint Patrick's County Park.
