CHICAGO - Freshmen Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) and Christine Bowe (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) were both awarded all-tournament honors over the weekend in helping lead the Saint Xavier University volleyball team to a 3-1 record at the Cedarville University (Ohio) Invitational in Cedarville, Ohio. Mullaney, an outside hitter, racked up 45 kills over the four matches, while Bowe, a libero, was impressive defensively with 31 combined digs. The Cougars (9-5 overall) lost the opening match to University of Saint Francis (Ind.), but bounced back with three consecutive wins over Cedarville University (Ohio), Indiana University-East and Indiana University-Southeast, respectively.

In the first match of the weekend, junior outside hitter Danielle Malloy (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) played solid for SXU leading the team with 11 kills. However, the Cougars dropped the match in four sets 20-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-25. Sophomore setter Ashley August (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township) posted 21 assists and two service aces, while Mullaney recorded nine kills and seven digs. Saint Xavier responded quickly following the loss by defeating host Cedarville in three sets 25-20, 25-18, 25-17 behind 11 kills from sophomore middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community). Mullaney finished with 10 kills and five digs, while Bowe posted six digs in the victory. August recorded 31 assists as well in Friday's win.

The Cougars carried the momentum into Saturday winning a thrilling match against Indiana University-East in five sets 18-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-19, 15-12. Mullaney and Scudder led the charge with 12 kills apiece, while senior right side Stephanie Galas (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) and freshman outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) tallied 10 kills each. August sets things up with 29 assists in addition to her team-best six digs. In the weekend's final match against Indiana University-Southeast, SXU picked up another victory in four sets 25-21, 15-25, 25-19, 25-18 with Mullaney and Knudsen each recording 14 kills. Bowe was tough defensively with 11 digs, while August finished with 25 assists for the Cougars.

Saint Xavier (9-5 overall/1-0 CCAC) heads to Kenosha, Wis., to take on NCAA Division II University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Tuesday, September 15. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
