CHICAGO - Behind two second-half goals by senior utility player Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg), the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team picked up a 2-1 win over Grand View University (Iowa) on day two of the two-day SXU-Robert Morris Women's Soccer Tournament Sunday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Martinez actually had a goal negated by an offsides penalty in the 66th minute of play that would have given the Cougars a 1-0 lead, but quickly redeemed herself netting back-to-back goals within 77 seconds of each other in the 68th and 69th minutes, respectively.
The Vikings were able to cut into the 2-0 lead with just under eight minutes remaining in regulation when senior midfielder Kelsey Brown found the back of the net from 10 yards out in front of the goal. Martinez had her first goal of the game assisted by senior midfielder Cecilia Cline (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle), while her second goal came off a pass from freshman defender Andrea Veldhuizen (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic). Junior Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake Orion) got the victory in goal for SXU finishing the game with four saves. The Cougars out-shot the Vikings, 16-9, in the game.
Saint Xavier (4-3-0 overall) continues its season on Saturday, September 19, with a home game against Indiana Wesleyan University (Ind.) at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
