Bensenville, Ill. - Despite a game-tying goal in the 60th minute by freshman forward Elysha Peele (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), Saint Xavier University could not pick up a victory Saturday falling 2-1 to Graceland University (Iowa) in the first day of the two-day SXU/Robert Morris Women's Soccer Tournament in Bensenville, Ill. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake Orion) had another impressive outing for the Cougars racking up 14 saves in the 90-minute affair. With the loss, SXU falls to 3-3-0 overall this season, while the Yellowjackets improve to 2-0-2.
After a scoreless first half, Graceland scored the game's first goal in the 52nd minute when junior forward Chelsea Phillips found an opening in the upper left corner of the goal from 20 yards out off an assist from sophomore forward Karina Vega. Peele's goal tied things up just under eight minutes later when she also found a hole in the upper left corner of the goal off a pass from junior forward Kelly Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont). However, the score did not stay tied for long. Just three minutes later, Phillips struck again for the Yellowjackets scoring the eventual game-winner off an assist from senior defender Olyvia Gaytan. The Cougars had difficulty generating offensive opportunities in the second half with its lone goal serving as the team's only shot-on-goal after halftime. Graceland out-shot SXU, 20-11, in the game and had 16 shots-on-goal compared to just four by the Cougars.
Saint Xavier (3-3-0 overall) wraps up the tournament on Sunday, September 13, with a game against Grand View College (Iowa) at 1:30 p.m. at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The first game Sunday will feature Robert Morris University (Ill.) against Graceland at 11 a.m. also at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field.
