Olathe, Kan. - Saint Xavier University senior wide receiver Jarrod Nowman (Manteno, Ill./Bishop McNamara) was named the Special Teams Football Player of the Week by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Monday following an impressive outing in the Cougars' 37-14 road win over Malone College (Ohio) this weekend. Nowman recorded 150 yards on four punt returns, including a 70-yard return for a touchdown just under a minute before halftime that put SXU ahead, 34-0.
In addition to his national recognition, Nowman was named the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League Special Teams Player of the Week as well Monday. Senior linebacker Rick King (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) also received recognition from the MSFA this week earning Defensive Player of the Week honors for the Midwest League. King did a little bit of everything Saturday recording three solo tackles, two assists, one and a half tackles for losses totaling five yards, a half a sack, an interception and two pass breakups as the SXU defense allowed only one offensive touchdown in the game.
SXU (2-1 overall) will host No. 11 Geneva College (Pa.) for its annual homecoming game on Saturday, September 24. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. as the Cougars wrap up their second of two Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) crossover games.
