CHICAGO - Behind a game-high eight kills by freshman outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team won their Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) opener Tuesday night defeating Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in three straight sets at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (6-4 overall/1-0 CCAC) had little trouble putting the Crimson Wave away winning by at least 10 points in each of the three sets 25-13, 25-15, 25-12. SXU had an impressive attack percentage of .424 with 32 kills and only seven attack errors in the match.
Another top performer for Saint Xavier Tuesday night was senior right side Stephanie Galas (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) with five kills and four service aces. In addition, junior outside hitter Danielle Malloy (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park), sophomore middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) and freshman outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) each recorded six kills in the match. Sophomore setter Ashley August (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township) tallied 21 assists toward the winning effort, while freshman libero Christine Bowe (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) posted five digs to lead the SXU defense.
Saint Xavier (6-4 overall/1-0 CCAC) heads to Cedarville, Ohio, this weekend to participate in the two-day Cedarville University Volleyball Tournament. The Cougars open the event Friday with a 4 p.m. match against University of Saint Francis (Ind.).
