Joliet, Ill. - Earning both her first victory and shutout of the season over the weekend, junior goalkeeper Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake Orion) was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week Tuesday for the week ending September 6. The Cougars went 1-1 on the week falling to Aquinas College (Mich.), 1-0, in their first game, but then bouncing back with a big 1-0 win over No. 20 ranked Ohio Dominican University (Ohio).
Shugar was tough in both of her starts last week. Against No. 20 Ohio Dominican, she collected 11 saves without allowing a goal to earn her first shutout as a Cougar. In the 1-0 loss to Aquinas (a team receiving votes in the NAIA national preseason poll), Shugar tallied seven saves. Saint Xavier is now 2-2 overall on the year.
Saint Xavier (2-2-0 overall) heads to Fort Wayne, Ind., on Thursday, September 10, to take on NAIA non-conference foe University of Saint Francis (Ind.). The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
