CHICAGO - Led by the strong attacking duo of freshman Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) and sophomore middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team was victorious winning their final two matches Saturday in the Saint Xavier University/Illinois Institute of Technology Crossover Tournament at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (5-4 overall) won their first match against McKendree University (Ill.) in four sets 25-17, 9-25, 25-14, 25-22. SXU then defeated Avila (Mo.) in four sets 28-26, 25-9, 23-25, 25-21 in the late match. The Cougars finished the tournament with a 2-2 record in their four matches on the weekend.
Mullaney and Scudder were on fire offensively in Saturday's first match against McKendree combining for 26 kills (13 apiece), while Scudder also recorded four service aces. Defensively, sophomore libero Erin Sebo (Downers Grove, Ill./St. Scholastica/Downers Grove North) finished with five digs and also tallied three service aces in the winning effort. Sophomore setter Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) set things up for SXU with a team-best 27 assists.
In the second match of the day, Scudder was tough again posting 11 kills and five service aces for the Cougars, while junior outside hitter Danielle Malloy (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) and freshman outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) each tallied eight kills against Avila. Sophomore setter Ashley August (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township) led SXU with 26 assists, while Sebo was solid defensively with six digs.
Saint Xavier (5-4 overall) opens conference play at home on Tuesday, September 8, with a match against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.). The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
