CHICAGO - Despite a combined 17 kills by sophomore middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team had trouble closing out their two matches Friday on day one of the two-day Saint Xavier University/Illinois Institute of Technology Crossover Tournament at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars lost their first match against Baker University (Kan.) in five sets 17-25, 25-23, 25-20, 12-25, 7-15. SXU then fell to William Penn University (Iowa) in four sets 22-25, 25-20, 10-25, 20-25 in the late match.
In the first match of the day against Baker, the Cougars were led offensively by freshman outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) with 11 kills and five service aces. Scudder also played well in Friday's first match totaling nine kills and a block assist. Sophomore setter Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) helped set up the offense with a team-best 21 assists, while freshman libero Christine Bowe (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) was tough defensively with nine digs.
Against William Penn, Scudder and freshman outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) each finished with eight kills to pace the offensive attack for Saint Xavier. Sophomore setter Ashley August (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township) set things up by posting a team-best 17 assists, while Bowe led the SXU defensive effort with seven digs in addition to her three service aces.
Saint Xavier (3-4 overall) wraps up the two-day Saint Xavier University/Illinois Institute of Technology Crossover Tournament Saturday at the Shannon Center with a pair of matches against McKendree University (Ill.) and Avila University (Mo.), respectively. The Cougars take on McKendree at 10 a.m. followed by Avila at 2 p.m.
