Grand Rapids, Mich. - Behind a pair of goals by sophomore midfielder Cody Culver (Roscoe, Ill./Harlem), the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team defeated Cornerstone University (Mich.), 3-0, in NAIA action Thursday afternoon in Grand Rapids, Mich. In addition, senior goalkeeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) recorded his third straight shutout to help SXU improve to 3-1 overall this season.
Culver notched the game's first goal just over a minute into the second half when he scored on an unassisted shot after weaving through a medley of defenders. In the 73rd minute, the Cougars went ahead, 2-0, when sophomore midfielder Adrian Guzman (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) found the back of the net off an assist from sophomore midfielder Al Palar (Zabrze, Poland/Plainfield Central). Culver added another insurance goal in the 76th minute when senior forward Zach Kekelik (Merrillville, Ind./Crown Point) headed a ball over to him off a cross for the game's final score.
Saint Xavier (3-1 overall) heads to Goshen, Ind., to take on Goshen College (Ind.) on Wednesday, September 9. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. (eastern) start.
