CHICAGO - After seven penalty kick attempts following two overtime periods, No. 6 seeded Trinity Christian College (Ill.) earned the right to advance to the NAIA Region VII semifinals over No. 14 ranked and No. 3 seed Saint Xavier University in the quarterfinals game Tuesday at SXU Stadium in Chicago. The game was tied, 1-1, throughout the second half and both 10-minute overtime periods and, for records purposes, is scored as a tie.
Saint Xavier scored the first goal of the game when sophomore midfielder Alana LoPresti (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) found the back of the net off an assist from junior forward Angie Holmes (Shorewood, Ill./Providence Catholic) with 21:35 to play in the first half. Trinity Christian senior forward Jessica Eenigenburg tied the game at 1-1 when freshman forward Natalie Buikema found her open on a pass with 8:05 remaining before halftime. SXU senior goalkeeper Melissa Painter (Elk Grove, Calif./William Penn University) finished with 19 saves in the extended game.
Following the overtime periods, each team scored on three of its first five penalty kick attempts, which resulted in a "sudden death" format for the remaining kicks. After players for both teams scored on their sixth attempts, Saint Xavier missed its seventh kick and TCC freshman midfielder Kerry Shea scored to allow the Trolls to advance.
No. 14 Saint Xavier (14-4-2 overall/8-1 CCAC) still has the opportunity to earn an at-large bid to the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, Kan. The tournament begins on Wednesday, November 16.
