Dearborn, Mich. - Despite 21 kills and five service aces by sophomore middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team lost two hard-fought matches in the final day of the University of Michigan-Dearborn Earlybird Collegiate Challenge Saturday in Dearborn, Mich. In SXU's first match of the day against Spring Arbor University (Mich.), the Cougars dropped the match in five sets 24-26, 25-18, 18-25, 25-23, 10-15. In the final match of the event, SXU went four sets with Notre Dame College (Ohio) and fell 18-25, 25-15, 21-25, 23-25. After the weekend, freshman outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) was named to the Earlybird Collegiate Challenge All-Tournament Team.
Mullaney combined for 28 total kills Saturday over the final two matches, while senior outside hitter Stephanie Galas (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) tallied 16 kills and four service aces. Freshman libero Christine Bowe (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) racked up 24 digs and four service aces in the final two matches, while sophomore setters Ashley August (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township) and Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) finished with 42 and 28 assists, respectively.
Saint Xavier (3-2 overall) co-hosts the two-day Saint Xavier University/Illinois Institute of Technology Crossover Tournament this weekend and will open the event with a 4 p.m. match against Baker University (Kan.) on Friday, September 4.
