Helena, Mont. - Despite a penalty kick goal by senior forward Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) in the game's 67th minute, the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team fell, 2-1, to Carroll College (Mont.) Saturday evening at Nelson Stadium in Helena, Mont. The game was scoreless through the first half, but the Saints were able to score a pair of goals within five minutes of one another early in the second half to take a 2-0 lead. Martinez was able to cut the lead in half with her PK, but that was as close as the Cougars would get over the remaining 22 minutes of play.
Junior transfer Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake Orion) got the start in goal for SXU and played well posting a game-best eight saves. The game's first goal came just a little over a minute into the second half when Carroll sophomore forward Molly Clark played a ball in the air to sophomore forward Meghan O'Connell, who connected a impressive volley that found the back of the net. Just under five minutes later, O'Connell took advantage of a breakdown in the Cougar defense and got an assist through to sophomore midfielder Taryne Ela for the score. Martinez was tripped from behind in the box to set up her goal-scoring penalty kick in the 67th minute. SXU had its chances to tie the game in the final 20 minutes of regulation, but could not get the ball past Saints senior keeper Katie Beall, who finished the game with seven saves. Junior forward Kelly Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) led the offensive attack for the Cougars finishing with four shots-on-goal.
Saint Xavier (1-1-0 overall) returns to action next weekend co-hosting the two-day SXU/Judson University Classic. The Cougars open with a match against Aquinas College (Mich.) on Friday, September 4, at 5 p.m. at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
