Helena, Mont. - A header by sophomore midfielder Nancy Schueth (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X) with just eight minutes remaining in regulation lifted Saint Xavier University to a thrilling 2-1 season-opening victory over the University of Great Falls (Mont.) in NAIA women's soccer action Friday night in Helena, Mont. Schueth had an all-around solid evening for the Cougars recording the assist on SXU's first goal of the game. Saint Xavier was aggressive offensively outshooting Great Falls, 9-3, in shots-on-goal.
The Cougars struck first in the game's 16th minute when Schueth found sophomore forward Lauren LaRoy (Orland Park, Ill./Marist) open for a shot that she sent to the back of the net to give her team an early 1-0 lead. SXU carried the lead into halftime and held it until the 81st minute when sophomore Ashly Pezel sent a shot ricocheting off senior goalkeeper Cecilia Cline (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) and into the goal to tie the game. However, the Cougars struck right back scoring less than a minute after the Argo's goal to take back their previous lead. Cline finished the game with three saves, while senior forward Kelly Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) led the offensive charge with three shots-on-goal.
Saint Xavier (1-0 overall) continues play in Helena, Mont., on Saturday, August 29, taking on host Carroll College (Mont.). The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
