Dearborn, Mich. - Freshman outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) continued the hot start to her collegiate career by leading the Saint Xavier University volleyball team to a pair of wins Friday at the University of Michigan-Dearborn Earlybird Collegiate Challenge Friday night in Dearborn, Mich. In SXU's first match against Davenport University (Mich.), Mullaney finished with 17 kills as the Cougars won the match in five sets 17-25, 25-20, 25-14, 22-25, 15-9. In the night's second match, she racked up 12 more kills as Saint Xavier won in four sets 14-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-20. It is the program's first 3-0 start to a season since 2001.

The Cougars had no shortage of playmakers in Friday's matches with freshman outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) combining for 23 kills on the evening and senior outside hitter Stephanie Galas (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) racking up 21 kills. The setters got plenty of work as well Friday with sophomore Ashley August (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township) recording 59 assists in the team's first match against Davenport and sophomore Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) posting 39 assists versus Marian.

Saint Xavier (3-0 overall) continues play Saturday in the two-day University of Michigan-Dearborn Earlybird Collegiate Challenge. The Cougars face off against No. 17 ranked Indiana Institute of Technology at 8:30 a.m. eastern time before wrapping the event with a 10:45 a.m. match against Notre Dame College (Ohio).
