Men's Soccer - Fri, Aug. 28, 2009
CHICAGO - Behind a game-high 13 saves by senior goalkeeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic), the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team pulled off one of the biggest wins in the program's 20-year history with a 1-0 victory over No. 2 ranked University of Rio Grande (Ohio) Friday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Sophomore midfielder Al Palar (Zabrze, Poland/Plainfield Central) tallied the game's only goal when he converted on a free kick in the game's 17th minute. Pickett and the Cougar defense played tough throughout thwarting all 13 of the Red Storm's shot-on-goal attempts.

"This was an unbelievably great win for our guys and our program," said SXU men's soccer coach Ed Vucinic. "If the team works this hard throughout the season, we are going to win a lot of games. It was a gritty win and our guys showed a lot of guts on the field tonight. I am very happy for them."

Palar led the offensive attack for Saint Xavier attempting five shots-on-goal in the game, while junior midfielder Ben Johnson (Woodridge, Ill./Western Illinois/Naperville North) also recorded a shot-on-goal for the Cougars. Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Lower finished with five saves for the Red Storm, while forward Joe Theissen led the offense with three shots-on-goal.

Saint Xavier (1-1 overall) heads downtown Saturday to the campus of Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) to take on Columbia College (Mo.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
