Colombia, Ky. -- Despite trailing by just a goal at the half, the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team could not slow down No. 6 ranked Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) in the second half and fell 3-0 in its season opener Saturday night at Walter S. Reuling Stadium in Colombia, Ky. The Cougars (0-1-0 overall) struggled to get scoring opportunities not managing any shots on goal in the game.
Sophomore Samuel Asante took a pass from freshman Chris Ochieng that he rocketed past SXU senior goalkeeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) to put LWC ahead 1-0 in the game's 14th minute. The Blue Raiders played the role of aggressor for the entire first half of the match leading the Cougars in shots, 10-1.
Lindsey Wilson began to pull away in the 53rd minute when sophomore Moses Aduny put his team up, 2-0, on a blast from the right corner of the box. With just over four minutes left in the game, freshman Tom Davies converted a breakaway counter to put the game out of reach, 3-0. For the game, Lindsey Wilson led Saint Xavier in total shots, 15-5. Pickett finished with two saves playing the entire 90 minutes in goal for the Cougars.
Saint Xavier (0-1-0 overall) continues its season on Friday, August 28, with its home opener against No. 2 ranked University of Rio Grande (Ohio). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Stadium in Chicago.
