Grand Island, Neb. - Saint Xavier University senior linebacker Mike Lally (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Rita) was one of just six NAIA football players nationwide named to the College Fanz Sports Network 2009 NAIA Football Super Six list late Monday. The list highlights the top six players in the country looking to lead their respective teams in the upcoming 2009 campaign. In addition to Lally, the list also included: University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) senior defensive back Trevor Holleman, University of Saint Francis (Ind.) senior running back Daniel Carter, Shorter College (Ga.) senior running back A.J. Cooley, University of Sioux Falls senior offensive lineman T.J. Wendt and Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) junior wide receiver Mike Hayward.
"This is an outstanding group of small college football players," said Jason Dannelly, director of college relations for College Fanz. "Each of these student-athletes has a great chance to lead their squads into the postseason."
During the 11 games of the 2008 season, Lally led the Cougar defense with 104 total tackles, including 67 solo stops. He also finished with team-bests of 24 tackles for losses, eight sacks and seven quarterback hurries. Lally's 24 tackles for losses in 2008 set a new single season mark at Saint Xavier. The previous record was 16 set twice in the same season by Nick Block and Dan Casasanto in 2001.
"Mike had an outstanding junior season and was one of the primary reasons our team was ranked No. 5 nationally in rushing defense (75.8 yards allowed per game)," said SXU football coach Mike Feminis. "He will be the defensive leader for our team this season and we expect more great things. Mike has a tremendous work ethic and always gives 100 percent."
Saint Xavier begins its 2009 season at home with a Thursday night game against Bethel College (Tenn.). The opener is scheduled for Thursday, August 27, at 7 p.m. at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Stadium in Chicago.
