Kansas City, Mo. - The No. 24 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team recently had senior Gianna Pavone (Orland Park, Ill./St. Joseph's College) as well as juniors Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) and Rebekah Ruettiger (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) recognized as 2009 Daktronics-NAIA Softball Scholar-Athletes when the national office released the names following the 2009 NAIA Softball National Championship Tournament, which wrapped last week in Decatur, Ala. Pavone was a third baseman for the Cougars, while Shearer served as the team's No. 1 pitcher and Ruettiger started in right field this past spring. The trio also served as team captains in 2009.

To be named a Daktronics-NAIA Softball Scholar-Athlete, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.50 grade-point average (GPA) on a 4.00 scale and be at least a junior in academic standing with one full academic year completed at the nominating institution. In total, 292 softball players from 119 NAIA institutions were recognized as 2009 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes.
