CHICAGO - On Saturday, April 18, the Saint Xavier University men's track team travelled to Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill., for the Mid-Season Invite. Highlights for the Cougars were freshman Matt Rychel's (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) fourth place finish in the 1500-meter run in 4:00.77, sophomore Evan Lowry (Horton, Mich./Hanover-Horton) running the 800 meters in 1:59.41, junior Chris Spencers' (Frankfort, Ill./Eastern Illinois University/Lincoln-Way East) third place finish in the 400 meter hurdles in 56.88 and freshman Andrew Peters' (Yellow Springs, Ohio/Yellow Springs) second place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 10:31.99. "I feel that we ran realtively well," stated SXU men's track coach Ed McAllister. "This was the first meet where it was warm enough to get decent times and it was necessary to finally see where we stood. Hopefully, we've got a few national qualifiers in the mix here."
The Cougars next went to Hillsdale College (Mich.) in Hillsdale, Mich., to take part in the Gina Relays. Many of the best teams in the Mideast area compete at this fine meet. Highlights for Saint Xavier were the 3200-meter relay team consisting of freshmen Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South), Peters, Rychel and sophomore Lowry with a time of 7:58.64. Spencer ran a solid 400-meter hurdle race in 56.24, while freshman KJ Franklin (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee) finished seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 44' 7". "We have a number of guys on the bubble," remarked McAllister. "With our last chance in two weeks, I can see three or four individuals meeting the national qualifying standard." The Cougars' final scheduled meet takes place at North Central on Friday, May 8.
