Kansas City, Mo. - Making its first appearance since 2004, the No. 24 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team heads to Decatur, Ala., Tuesday to take part in the 2009 NAIA Softball National Championship, which begins with pool play on Thursday, May 14, at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex. The Cougars (30-18 overall) will open with a 7:30 p.m. (central) match-up against No. 11 ranked University of Houston-Victoria (Texas) on Thursday, May 14. SXU will then play No. 7 Saint Gregory's University (Okla.) on Friday, May 15, at 10 a.m. and wrap up pool play on Saturday, May 16, with a 2:30 p.m. game against unranked Savannah College of Art & Design (Ga.). Winners from each of the eight, four-team pools will move on to an eight-team, double elimination bracket played from May 18-20.
The entire championship will be played at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex in Decatur, Ala. In all, 32 teams will come together in Decatur to play for the championship, as 25 squads received automatic bids and seven more made the tournament as at-large selections.
