Crestwood, Ill. - Despite a rain delay of over an hour, the No. 25 ranked Saint Xavier University baseball team was able to wrap up its regular season Thursday with a big 22-5 victory in eight innings over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Trinity Christian College (Ill.) at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood, Ill. The Cougars (39-13 overall/25-5 CCAC) pounded out 20 hits in the game and held the Trolls scoreless after the first inning. The delay came in the top of the fourth inning and lasted roughly an hour and fifteen minutes.
SXU had no shortage of impressive individual performances in Thursday's victory with four batters in the line-up recording three or more hits. Senior first baseman Matt Van Mill (Palos Heights, Ill./Bishop McNamara) led the way going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a homer, two runs scored and two RBI. Junior shortstop John O'Brien (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) also played well going 3-for-5 with a double, triple, three runs scored and five RBI; while freshman catcher Jim Pipolo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and three RBI. Junior left fielder Tony Testin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) also finished with three hits, three runs scored and a RBI. Senior righthander Dan Miller (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) had a rough first inning allowing five runs, but settled down and got the victory to improve to 8-2 on the year. He threw the first three innings and allowed seven hits, five runs (all earned) and three walks with one strikeout. Senior rightie Rick Kehoe (Palos Heights, Ill./Richards) threw four innings of scoreless relief giving up two hits and walking four with five strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (39-13 overall, 25-5 CCAC) finished first place in the final conference standings and has automatically qualified for the NAIA Opening Round Tournament, which begins next week on Tuesday, May 12. SXU will learn its seeding in the tournament as well as which site it will be sent to on Friday, May 8.
