CHICAGO - Saint Xavier University junior pitcher Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2009 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Softball Tournament and five other Cougar players were named to the all-tournament team when the honors were released late Wednesday following the event at SXU Softball Field in Chicago. In addition to Shearer, senior third baseman Megen Friscia (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport), sophomore second baseman Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg), sophomore catcher Amy Kennedy (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac), freshman pitcher Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and freshman shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) also earned spots on the all-tourney squad. SXU softball coach Myra Minuskin was named the 2009 CCAC Softball Coach of the Year following the tournament as well.
"To have our backs against the wall and battle back to win the tournament in the fashion that we did is a testament to this team," said Minuskin. "Jalyn had a sensational tournament and is very deserving of the MVP honor. We had some outstanding individual performances during the tournament and each one of these players is worthy of the recognition."
Saint Xavier (30-18 overall/14-4 CCAC) won three elimination games Wednesday in the conference tournament to earn its berth in the 2009 NAIA Softball National Championship. The Cougars currently await their seed for the national tournament, which begins on Thursday, May 14, in Decatur, Ala. SXU has not qualified for the event since the 2004 season.
