Joliet, Ill. - After one of the biggest wins in the history of the Saint Xavier University men's soccer program last Friday, sophomore midfielder Al Palar (Zabrze, Poland/Plainfield Central) and senior goalkeeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) were named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for the week ending August 30. The unranked Cougars upset No. 2 University of Rio Grande (Ohio), 1-0, while also picking up another big 1-0 victory against Columbia College (Mo.) to improve to 2-1-0 on the year.
Palar provided all the offense for SXU scoring both goals in the pair of 1-0 victories. Both goals were scored on free kicks. Pickett was outstanding in the goal, posting back-to-back shutouts. In the win over Rio Grande, Pickett recorded 13 saves, while posting six saves in the victory over Columbia. It is the team's best start to a season since the 2006 campaign.
Saint Xavier (2-1-0 overall) heads to Michigan on Thursday, September 3, to take on non-conference NAIA foe Cornerstone University (Mich.). The game is slated for a 3 p.m. (eastern) start.
