CHICAGO - Junior pitcher Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) was named the 2009 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Pitcher of the Year as Saint Xavier University had five of its players named to the 2009 All-CCAC Softball Team when it was announced Monday in collaboration with the 2009 CCAC Softball Tournament at SXU Softball Field in Chicago. In addition to Shearer, sophomore first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest), sophomore centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) and freshman shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) earned first team honors on the all-conference squad, while sophomore second baseman Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) garnered honorable mention recognition.
Shearer earned her first collegiate appearance on the All-CCAC Softball Team by turning in an impressive 14-7 record thus far with a team-low 1.41 earned run average (ERA). She has also recorded six shutouts, 90 strikeouts and 20 complete games over her 144.1 innings on the mound in 22 appearances. Murphy had another exceptional season as SXU's first baseman hitting .317 with 44 hits, 28 runs scored and 28 RBI. She has been just as good defensively with a team-best 351 putouts and only nine errors for a .976 fielding percentage. Paradzinski currently leads the Cougars in batting average (.400), hits (56), runs scored (31) and stolen bases (8). Hunter has put together an amazing freshman debut season hitting .299 on the year with 43 hits, including a team-best 11 doubles. She has also posted 25 runs scored and a team-leading 32 RBI. Hannigan is hitting .283 with 28 hits and 23 runs scored. In her first year at second base after moving over from shortstop, she has been a defensive bright spot recording 85 putouts and 63 assists with just four errors for a .974 fielding percentage.
Saint Xavier (27-17 overall/14-4 CCAC) will take on No. 2 seed Robert Morris College (Ill.) on Tuesday, April 28, at 3 p.m. in the semifinals of the 2009 CCAC Softball Tournament to determine which team will advance to Wednesday's championship without a loss in the double-elimination tourney. The tournament continues Tuesday at 10 a.m. at SXU Softball Field in Chicago.
