Fort Wayne, Ind. - Despite scoring seven runs in the final inning of game one, the Saint Xavier University baseball team dropped its first game, 12-11, and went on to split a non-conference doubleheader with Indiana Institute of Technology (Ind.) Sunday afternoon at Warrior Field in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Cougars (33-12 overall) came back with a vengeance in the nightcap beating the Warriors, 13-3, in just five innings. In game one, Saint Xavier trailed 8-4 going into the the last frame. The Cougars put up seven runs in the top of the seventh to take an 11-8 advantage. However, sophomore closer Ken Hurta (Midlothian, Ill./Bremen) failed to close out the Warriors in the bottom half of the inning giving up four runs and dropped to 2-1 on the season with the loss. Offensively for the Cougars, junior Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill./Morton) and Mark Siefert (Crest Hill, Ill./Joliet Catholic) each had two hits. Senior first baseman Matt Van Mill (Palos Heights, Ill./Bishop McNamara) finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a homer to centerfield (his sixth of the year), while junior designated hitter Ken Tezak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) went 1-for-3 with three RBI.

In the second game, the Cougars used an eight-run fifth inning to end the game by the 10-run rule. Senior righthanders Rick Kehoe (4 IP, 3 R) and Dan Miller (1 IP, 0 R) combined to pitch the victory. With the win, Kehoe improves to 5-3 on the season. The Cougars took an early lead in the top of the second inning thanks to a solo home run to left field by sophomore third baseman Austin Lehmann (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka), his first of the season. SXU tacked on two runs in both the third and fourth innings before delivering the final eight-run blow in the fifth. Lehmann finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Tezak continued his stellar offensive day going 3-for-4 with five RBI. Tezak finished with eight RBI on the day and also clubbed his team-leading eighth home run in game two.
