Mishawaka, Ind. - Behind solid outings by sophomore second baseman Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) and freshman pitcher Nicole Derezinski (St. John, Ind./Andrean), the Saint Xavier University softball team won the second game of its non-conference doubleheader against No. 7 ranked Bethel College (Ind.) in both team's regular season finale Friday in Mishawaka, Ind. SXU (26-17 overall) managed just three hits in a 1-0 loss in Friday's first game, but played much tougher in game two to capture the 5-2 victory. The Cougar win snapped a 25-game win streak for the Pilots, who fall to 46-4 overall this season with the loss.
Junior Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) threw remarkably in game one, but suffered the loss (13-7 overall) when Bethel scored its game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Shearer went all six-and-a-third innings and allowed seven hits, one run and three walks with a pair of strikeouts. Senior third baseman Megen Friscia (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport), sophomore centerfielder Megan Parazinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) and freshman shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) each recorded a hit in the ballgame to total Saint Xavier's three hits.
Hannigan had the hot bat for SXU in the nightcap going 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. Hunter also finished the game with two hits going 2-for-3 with a run scored, while sophomore left fielder Lisa Gryczewski (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) went 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Derezinski had a solid outing on the mound throwing the first six innings and giving up just nine hits, two runs (both earned) and a walk with two strikeouts. She improves to 4-3 overall this season with the victory. The game was tied, 2-2, after four innings of play before the Cougars rattled off three unanswered runs over the next two innings to get the win. Bethel outhit SXU, 9-7, in the game, but could not overcome two errors in the field.
Saint Xavier (26-17 overall/14-4 CCAC) currently sits in second place in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) standings and awaits the results of today's Olivet Nazarene University and Robert Morris College match-up to determine its final rank. Its final conference mark will also determine SXU's seed in next week's 2009 CCAC Softball Tournament, which begins Monday at SXU Softball Field in Chicago.
