CHICAGO - Sophomore centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI on the day as the Saint Xavier University softball team swept a pair of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) games from Trinity Christian College (Ill.) Wednesday afternoon at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars (25-16 overall/14-4 CCAC) won the first game, 3-0, and then exploded for 11 runs in game two to take an 11-2 decision in just five innings. SXU clinched at least a second place finish, trailing only Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.), in the conference regular season standings with Wednesday's sweep.
Junior Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) nearly threw a no-hitter Wednesday allowing just one hit and no walks en route to her fifth shutout of the season. She struck out four Troll batters in the game as well and improved to 13-6 overall this season with the victory. Paradzinski led the way at the plate going 2-for-2 with a run scored, while sophomore catcher Amy Kennedy (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac) went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Sophomore first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) and freshman shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) each recorded a RBI in the game one win. Saint Xavier scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth inning and tacked on two more runs in the fifth.
An eight-run first inning for the Cougars set the tone for Wednesday's shortened second game. Paradzinski, Murphy and Hunter each finished with two RBI, while Murphy and freshman catcher Amy Fairchild (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) each tallied two runs scored. Freshman Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) recorded the victory on the mound throwing all five innings and allowing just three hits, two runs (both earned) and no walks with a pair of strikeouts. Brown improves to 9-7 overall this season with the win.
Saint Xavier (25-16 overall/14-4 CCAC) wraps up its regular season on Friday, April 24, with a non-conference doubleheader against No. 7 ranked Bethel College (Ind.). The first game of the two-game set is scheduled for a 3 p.m. (eastern) start Friday.
