Bourbonnais, Ill. - Despite its youthful make-up of three freshmen and a sophomore, the Saint Xavier University 4x100 meter relay team qualified for the 2009 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships during their participation in last weekend's Mid-Season Invitational hosted by Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill. The relay team consisting of sophomore Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) and freshmen Ijeoma Ibe (Park Forest, Ill./Rich East), Brittany Jackson (Elmhurst, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) and Jacina Sims (Park Forest, Ill./Rich East) won the race with a qualifying time of 49.06. The NAIA "B" standard reporting mark for the women's outdoor 4x100 meter relay is 49.35 seconds.

In addition to the relay team, a number of individual SXU runners had successful performances at the Mid-Season Invitational this past Saturday. Jackson took first place in the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.89, while Young took third place in the same event at 12.93. Young also finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.09, while Sims took fourth place in 26.42. Sophomore Dana Eppley (Palos Heights, Ill./Shepard) finished second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:22.55 and junior Amanda Janosz (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) took fifth place at 2:26.02. Freshman Jackie Ott (Island Lake, Ill./Marian Catholic Central) finished second in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:51.66 and Janosz took fourth in 4:58.89. Junior Amy Poull (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) won the 5000-meter run in 18:39.57 and Ibe finished second in the long jump with a distance of 5.31 meters.

"Our team performed incredibly well Saturday," said SXU women's track coach Lisa Ebel. "As a whole, we set 20 personal best season marks. The highlight of the day was definitely our 4x100 meter relay team qualifying for Nationals."

The 2009 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships will be held from May 21-23 at Ralph Korte Stadium in Edwardsville, Ill. The relay team joins sophomores Annie Godette (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) and Katy Thomson (Matteson, Ill./Marian Catholic) as national qualifiers for Saint Xavier University from the outdoor season.
