Hammond, Ind. - The Saint Xavier University baseball team once again used a hot start to take a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) contest from Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.), 12-2, in eight innings Wednesday in Hammond, Ind. SXU has now scored 13 first-inning runs over their last three games. The Cougars (27-9 overall/16-2 CCAC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first and never looked back on their way to an early ending in eight innings. With today's victory, SXU increases its current win streak to 16 games.

The Cougars jumped on the Crimson Wave early thanks to five consecutive hits to begin the game. Juniors Tony Testin (Shorewood, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and Matt Mueller (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) had back-to-back bunt base hits to load the bases. Junior shortstop John O'Brien (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) then singled home senior centerfielder Don Skelly (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist) and Testin. O'Brien finished 2-for-3 in Tuesday's match-up with two RBI and three runs scored. Skelly went 4-for-5 on the day, while sophomore first baseman Matt Erickson (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards), filling in for the injured senior Matt Van Mill (Palos Heights, Ill./Bishop McNamara), finished 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. As a team, Saint Xavier pounded out 17 hits over the eight innings of play. Senior southpaw Kyle Zilis (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) picked up the win for SXU going seven strong innings, allowing just one run on two hits. He struck out eight and walked four. Zilis improves his overall record to 6-1 on the season.

Saint Xavier (27-9 overall/16-2 CCAC) continues play this weekend with a three-game series against the reigning conference champs and longtime rival University of St. Francis (Ill.). Game one will be played on Friday at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field on the Chicago campus of SXU. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The series will wrap up on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Silver Cross Stadium in downtown Joliet.
