Joliet, Ill. - Saint Xavier University freshman shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Softball Player of the Week for the week ending April 12 when the conference office released the weekly award Tuesday morning. This was the first time Hunter has received the honor in her young collegiate career and marks the third time this season that SXU has garnered the recognition with sophomore second baseman Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) being named on March 30 and sophomore centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) nabbing the award on March 9.
Hunter helped the Cougars split big CCAC doubleheaders against University of St. Francis (Ill.) and Robert Morris College (Ill.) last week going 7-for-15 at the plate and totaling three doubles, four runs scored and five RBI. Her three RBI in last Thursday's 4-2 Cougar victory in game two helped keep SXU from being swept by Robert Morris. She also had an RBI in the first game and collected three hits in seven at-bats (.429) with a pair of doubles over the two-game stretch. Hunter registered a pair of two-hit games in a doubleheader split with the Fighting Saints on April 7 with three runs scored in a 9-0 game two win.
Saint Xavier (21-14 overall/12-4 CCAC) returns to action on Thursday, April 16, with a non-conference home doubleheader against NCAA Division II University of Wisconsin-Parkside (Wis.). The twinbill is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at SXU Softball Field in Chicago.
