CHICAGO - Stellar pitching and hot hitting at the plate propelled the Saint Xavier University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep over Trinity International University (Ill.) by scores of 10-0 and 11-1 Saturday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars pounded out 25 hits on the day en route to 10-run ruling the Trojans in both games. For the series, the SXU offense plated 38 runs against TIU pitching.
In game one, Saint Xavier benefited from another fine performance on the mound by junior lefthander Jayson Koehn (Beecher, Ill./Beecher). Koehn threw all six innings in the shutout, limiting Trinity to just three hits, while striking out seven, to improve to 5-0 on the season, while lowering his already league-leading earned run average (ERA) of 0.62. The Cougars got on the board early with a four-run first inning thanks to a two-run, two-out RBI single by junior right fielder Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill./Morton). Every single SXU starter reached base at least once led by junior left fielder Tony Testin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic), who walked four times and scored three runs. Junior shortstop John O'Brien continued his hot hitting going 3-for-3 with three RBI.
In game two, the Cougars once again bounced out to an early lead by putting up three runs in the first inning. Testin, junior second baseman Matt Mueller (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) and O'Brien had consecutive singles and all scored in the frame. Testin finished 2-for-3, Mueller went 4-for-4, O'Brien went 2-for-2 and senior first baseman Matt Van Mill (Palos Heights, Ill./Bishop McNamara) finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Junior designated hitter Mark Siefert (Crest Hill, Ill./Joliet Catholic), who has been out a majority of this season due to injury, returned to go 2-for-3 with three RBI. Senior righthander Rick Kehoe (Palos Heights, Ill./Richards) threw all five innings of the shortened contest allowing one run on three hits and striking out six to even up his record at 3-3 overall. The Cougars also fielded extremely well on the day playing errorless baseball throughout the twinbill.
Saint Xavier (21-9 overall/10-2 CCAC) extends its season long winning streak to 10 games. The Cougars return to action Sunday at Wabash College (Ind.) for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Saint Xavier returns home on Tuesday to face Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in a conference doubleheader slated for a 1:30 p.m. start.
