CHICAGO - Sophomore second baseman Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) finished 2-for-7 with two runs scored and four RBI and supplied the game-winning RBI single in game one as Saint Xavier University swept Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) softball action Friday at SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars (14-11 overall/5-1 CCAC) won the first game, 4-3, in the bottom of the ninth inning and then defeated the Crimson Wave, 5-1, in seven innings in the nightcap.
A RBI single by Hannigan and a RBI double by sophomore first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) in the third inning gave SXU a 2-0 lead in the day's first game. However, three straight singles to open the sixth inning led to three runs and a one-run lead for Calumet College. A second RBI double by Murphy tied the game, 3-3, with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and sent the game to extra innings. Junior Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) racked up five of her 15 strikeouts in the extra two frames and Hannigan provided the late-game heroics at the plate to get the victory. Shearer threw all nine innings and allowed six hits, three runs (one earned) and no walks to improve to 8-4 overall on the season.
Freshman Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) kept the Crimson Wave bats in check for most of the second game giving up just three hits, an unearned run and two walks with five strikeouts. She improves to 5-4 overall with the win on the mound. Another RBI double by Murphy plated SXU's first run in the first inning, while a bases-loaded walk by Hannigan and a wild pitch in the second gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead after two innings of play. A fielding error in the third inning led to CCSJ's lone run of the game, but the Cougars added a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to get the 5-1 victory. Sophomore leftfielder Lisa Gryczewski (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) was tough at the plate for SXU in game two going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.
