Michigan City, Ind. - Behind a pair of stellar pitching performances by freshman Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and junior Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher), the Saint Xavier University softball team shut down the offense of Purdue University-North Central (Ind.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Tuesday afternoon in Michigan City, Ind. The Cougars (12-11 overall/3-1 CCAC) cruised to a 9-0 victory in five innings in the day's first game and then went on to claim a 3-0 win in the nightcap. Brown and Shearer allowed just six total hits over the doubleheader.

The SXU offense exploded for eight runs in the first two innings of game one, including six runs in the second frame. Sophomore second baseman Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) carried the big stick in the first game going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, triple and a homer with two runs scored and four RBI. Sophomore first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) had a two-run home run for the Cougars in the big second-inning scoring surge. Brown threw all five innings of the first game allowing just two hits and a walk with seven strikeouts to improve to 4-4 overall on the year.

SXU did not have as much run production in game two, but got the same result with a 3-0 victory. Shearer pitched all seven innings for the Cougars and gave up just four hits and a walk with two strikeouts. She improves to 7-4 overall with the win. A solo homer by sophomore catcher Amy Kennedy (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac) to lead off the second inning gave Saint Xavier an early 1-0 lead.
